The NHL needs to stop being so darn overprotective.

Certainly, the reduction in staged hockey fighting and the shrinking number of enforcer-types at the NHL level has been noticeable and inevitable given the concussion issues that have plagued hockey and other contact sports over the last few decades.

While there are many old school diehard hockey fans that will decry the instigator penalty and lament the loss of old time hockey where men were men, there are also plenty of those same old time hockey people complaining about the seemingly newfangled obligation to drop the gloves these days after hard clean hits.

So much so that the NHL general managers are talking about ways to address the very problem of hockey fights cropping up after clean, hard hockey hits.

But the evolving NHL pacificism really does have some problem areas when it comes to maintaining the very soul of hockey.
